Paywerk AS is an Estonian Fintech company, acquired by Swedbank AB in July 2024. Paywerk is currently undergoing a transformation from Buy Now Pay Later service provider to become an e-commerce competence centre for Swedbanks Baltic operations. In addition to its strong tech-driven approach, Paywerk is a licensed payment institution regulated by the Estonian FSA.

In Paywerk AS you have the opportunity to:
  • Develop and lead Paywerks software development team in delivering high-quality software solutions aligned with business goals, product strategy and timelines;
  • Own the technical direction and architectural decisions within the team, ensuring maintainability, scalability and performance;
  • Uphold coding standards, development best practices, and compliance with internal and external requirements;
  • Ensure continuous system availability and business continuity by overseeing infrastructure maintenance, leading regular recovery tests, and managing incidents through root cause analysis, resolution, and clear communication;
  • Maintain comprehensive documentation of system architecture, code, processes, and key decisions to support transparency, onboarding, and long-term maintainability;
  • Act as the main point of contact for cross-functional collaboration, representing the engineering team in discussions with product, operations, and other stakeholders;
  • Maintain and oversee up-to-date information registries and ensure critical knowledge is recorded and accessible.
What is needed in this role:
  • A minimum of a bachelors degree in computer science, software engineering, business, economics or a related field;
  • Proven experience leading software development teams, with a track record of delivering complex projects;
  • Strong proficiency in modern programming languages and frameworks (e.g., Java, .NET, Kotlin, JavaScript/TypeScript, and front-end solutions);
  • Solid understanding of software architecture, system design, and scalable application development;
  • Knowledge of banking, payment and/or card products and systems;
  • Experience with Agile methodologies (Scrum, Kanban) and software development best practices;
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate across cross-functional teams;
  • Familiarity with DevOps practices, CI/CD pipelines, and cloud platforms (e.g., GCP, AWS or Azure);
  • Previous experience balancing hands-on coding with leadership responsibilities, including analyzing complex technical challenges and designing effective, scalable solutions;
  • Ability to proactively identify bottlenecks, risks, and inefficiencies in development processes and propose actionable improvements while balancing short-term delivery needs with long-term architectural integrity and maintainability;
  • Ability to mentor and support team members in both technical and professional growth while encouraging collaborative problem-solving by fostering open dialogue and leveraging diverse team perspectives;
  • Professional fluency in English, both spoken and written; Estonian is considered an advantage.
